Verwood Concert Brass Players of the Year
Every year the Musical Directors of the three Verwood Concert Brass bands choose their “Player of the Year”. This is an award for the band member who they feel has made an exceptional contribution to the band over the last 12 months. This year the awards were made at the Band Social held in Verwood Memorial Hall and the theme for the evening was “Hats, Wigs and Masks” which explains the slightly strange attire of the happy award recipients! The social was held after the B Bands successful afternoon “Cream Tea Concert” where they played a wide variety of popular music to an appreciative local audience.
From left to right our “Players of the Year” 2010 were Anne Mayo (Verwood B Band), Frazer Smith (Verwood Training Band) and Janet Tiller (Verwood A Band). The awards were presented by band chairman Paul Coward

End of an Era!
The audience at Verwood Concert Brass' Autumn Concert did not realise it until the last 10 minutes, but they were experiencing the band's final performance under the baton of MD David Johnson. Chairman Paul Coward announced David's departure just prior to the final number and presented him with an engraved tankard from all the band members.
David, a musician with the Royal Marines, has conducted Verwood Concert Brass A band for the last four years. Not only did he achieve great success on the contest field, taking the band from Fourth to First section in the National Rankings, but he also proved very popular with the bands loyal concert audience due to his combination of top rate musicianship and easy humour.
Paul said “David has done great things with Verwood Concert Brass and will be much missed. He takes with him our sincere good wishes for the future. Auditions for the new MD will start shortly with a number of applicants already having expressed their interest. Hopefully you can come along and meet the new conductor at Christmas”.
Such is the popularity of the band that there will be two performances in the Verwood Hub of their Christmas Concert on Friday 17 th and Saturday 18 th of December.

VERWOOD'S TALENTED YOUTH
Heavier Than Air - Vocal :Tim Taylor Drums :Chris Inman Guitar :Jordan Gregory Bass :Will Dop.
Verwood's Annual Talented Youth Concerts took place in the Merryfield Theatre at The Hub on 21 st June. There was a full range of music and dance items from classical to rock, from solos to group singing and playing; from ballet to tap, Irish to street dancing – all proving how talented Verwood's young people are. Organiser, Angela Daymond said - “the show is organised to give young people the experience of appearing in a theatre and showing off their talents to a wider audience than is achieved through school concerts. It's very rewarding to see the progress made by those who have appeared in previous concerts.”
Kristina Sawyer (solo) accompanied by brother Matt on guitar and harmony
Proving that the show must still go on, one performer hurt his thumb rather badly on the morning of the concert, but still managed to play the drums and do a handstand as part of a modern dance routine. The concert also gave an opportunity for musicians, who did not previously know each other, to get together when they volunteered to play the National Anthem for the evening concert.
Sam Eliot (drums); Catherine Evans (cello); Charley Fleming (flute)
Any proceeds from the concerts will go to the HYPA fund (Hub Young People's Activities) to provide equipment and events at the Hub for young people.
